Yanukovych defends free economic zones

Prime Minister of Ukraine Victor Yanukovych considers that mechanism of free economic zones (FEZ) and territories of priority development (TPD) justified itself. The Premier told journalists in Donetsk.

“Mechanism of FEZ and TPD justified itself, but politicization of this process and populism of separate politicians resulted in that everything was destroyed in 2005. Now it is very difficult to return investors’ trust,” the PM said, having noted that change of preferential regime for FEZ and TPD lead to deficiency of investments, which effected social and industrial spheres.

As a reminder, in March 2005 the Verkhovna Rada decided to cancel privileges for FEZ and TPD. In August 2006 Yanukovych’s government declared an intention to renew privileges to attract investments.

Ukraine has 11 free economic zones and nine territories of priority development.
